=== Binnekring ===
The Binnekring is the centre of Tankwa Town. Translated from Afrikaans it means 'inner circle' ... In Black Rock City they call it 'The Playa', as AfrikaBurn is in the Karoo and not the USA we prefer Binnekring.

=== Boskak ===
A boskak comes from South African slang meaning to relieve oneself in nature. it literally means 'bush shit' and occasionally happens in the Binnekring which is horrific for someone to have to clean up. There are some lovely [[TOILETS IN TANKWA TOWN|toilets]] at the event site, rather use those!

=== Darkwad ===
A Darkwad is a person who walks or cycles at night without any lights. This can be extremely dangerous as there are bicycles and mutant vehicles driving around that will not be able to see these people and possibly bump into them. Light yourself & your bicycle up at night by using LED's, head lamps, EL-Wire or LED Flowtoys.

=== Don't be [[South African Slang|kak]], be [[South African Slang|lekker]] ===
Don't be kak, be lekker refers to a conscious way of being. Lekker comes from Afrikaans: referring to a person, object or event as amazing, fantastic or superb. Being a lekker person will make both your, and others' burn an even better event. Ways to be lekker: be kind, be conscious, leave no trace, be positive, be creative, love.
=== Ground Score ===
When one finds something exciting that doesn't belong in Lost and Found. A reward for those who collect MOOP.
=== Humanure ===
Humanure is human excrement that is recycled via composting for agricultural or other purposes. The [[TOILETS IN TANKWA TOWN|toilets]] in Tankwa Town are completely eco-friendly, what goes into the toilets returns to the Earth. The rule is if it did not naturally come out of your body, please do not put it there (that and singe-ply loo paper).

=== (ish) ===
Time moves differently in Tankwa Town. "Ish" is used to refer to a broader sense of time than what you're maybe used to. It refers to African Time: a more relaxed attitude as opposed to the clock-bound pace of Western countries. "When will we start the braai?", "Oh soon-ish". "What time are they burning the artwork?", "Around eight-ish". In addition, there being no timetable or schedule for any event during the burn, times stipulated are purely estimates of when something could happen. Not to be confused with 'Eish' which is South African slang for surprise or annoyance or any other number of emotions.
=== MOOP ===
MOOP or Matter Out Of Place is everything that doesn't belong in the Tankwa Karoo desert. Think litter, feathers, glitter etc. Read more about how to [[LEAVE NO TRACE|leave no trace]] at the event.

=== Plug and Play ===
Plug and Play refers to where you pay someone a (large) sum of money to set up all your comforts for you. Plug and Play camps are against the [[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|Guiding Principles]] of AfrikaBurn and are frowned upon - in a BIG way. The burn is all about contributing to this event together, practising Radical Self-reliance, with a Communal effort - so to pay someone to set up your environment/camp, goes against all the principles listed here - that's not lekker at all. Read more about how not to fall outside of the [https://www.afrikaburn.org/plug-and-play-guidelines/ Plug and Play guidelines].

=== Right now, now-now, just now. ===
Time is a whole different concept in South Africa. [[South African Slang|"Right now", "now-now" and "just now"]] have very different meanings: "right now" is this very moment, "now-now" means shortly, "just now" means later to never. Only South African's fully understand the subtleties between all the different types of now ... no matter what the type of 'now' just don't expect it to be NOW.

=== San Clan ===
Similar to the Man of [[wikipedia:Burning_Man|Burning Man]], AfrikaBurn calls its main sculpture at the event the San Clan. The design of the AfrikaBurn signifier [https://www.afrikaburn.org/about/the-organisation/history-acknowledgements/the-clan-history/ originates from a San cave painting] from Tarkastad depicting one body, several heads and many dancing feet. It portrays the idea of unity, collaboration and community at the event, and like some other sculptures at the event, it is burnt. The burn usually takes place on Saturday night.

=== SOOP ===
SOOP means Sound Out Of Place and goes for all sound pollution. AfrikaBurn has a [https://www.afrikaburn.org/afrikaburn-sound-policy/ sound policy] in place which came out of a need for finding a balance between radical self-expression and community. The sound policy aims to try keep SOOP to a healthy limit.

=== Sparkle Pony ===
A Sparkle Pony is a high maintenance person who comes to the burn unprepared for the harsh environment it takes place in. Often scantily dressed with the bulk of the outfit being MOOPy accessories. They will have 30 outfits with them but barely any water. They use others to take care of their basic needs and so become a burden to their camp mates. A Sparkle Pony completely throws the radical self-reliance principle out of the window. And remember, we all love a good outfit/costume but there many other ways of contributing in meaningful ways that go beyond mere sex appeal.

=== The Tim ===
It's all his fault.

=== Veteran ===
Someone who's done it all, seen it all, and gotten at least one t-shirt. Often seen rocking long silver dreadlocks, and cruising in vehicles just as janky as themselves.

=== Virgin ===
If you don't know what this is, you're likely to be one. A first time ticket holder. Soneone who's bitten off more than they can chew.

=== Weekend Warriors ===
Weekend Warriors is the term used for some people who only rock up on the Thursday or Friday of the event to party hard during the weekend. Usually, they're just there to consume and don't contribute much to the overall event. Don't be a weekend warrior! If you can only come for the weekend, don't forget to Volunteer!

=== ''South African Slang'' ===
There are some other words that we use as South Africans that our international friends may not know.
[[File:Leave No Trace.jpg|thumb|Leave no Trace|450x450px]]
===== Remember [[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|the Guiding Principles]]? Leaving no Trace is a big part of our ethos. =====

===== EVERYTHING THAT YOU BRING TO TANKWA TOWN IS MOOP (MATTER OUT OF PLACE)!! =====
Cigarette "''[[South African Slang|stompies]]''" (butts), GLITTER, glow sticks and glow stick connectors, tent stakes, bottle caps, '''ashes (yup!)''', duct tape scraps, wood debris, matchsticks, orange peels, pistachio shells, boa feathers, rope fibres, sequins, false eyelashes – even abandoned bikes…oh, and did we mention the ''[[South African Slang|stompies]]'' (cigarette butts) and cable ties?

'''MOOP also includes natural materials.''' They are not OK to leave in the desert – in the desert, things take ages to decompose. Hay, seashells, pretty rocks that you have brought from elsewhere, plant matter, '''fruit peels''', '''vegetable peels''', nut shells, feathers, coffee grounds, etc. '''are all things that must be removed.'''
= There is no rubbish collection in Tankwa Town. Everything you bring in, you must take back with you: '''Every'''. '''Single'''. '''Thing'''. If it came with you, it leaves with you. =
[[File:Moop2.jpg|left|thumb|200x200px|Make a plan to keep these on you and off the desert floor.]][[File:Moop Graphic.jpg|thumb|What you don't bring with, you don't need to bag and take home with you.|318x318px]]

== START WHEN YOU ARE PACKING. Before you head to the desert: ==
• Remove excess packaging from everything (and recycle it at home) – store food in re-usable, air-tight containers.

• Make good choices when buying drinks. Don’t bring glass - if it breaks you will 100% not be able to pick up every shard. Buy cans or decant into plastic (cans can be crushed and plastic bottles can be used as eco-bricks which help to consolidate your waste to save space on the return journey).

• Shake your hat/outfit/headdress really really hard before you pack it into your bag - did anything fall off? DON'T PACK IT! Your feather boa, glitter, confetti, sequins, feathers absolutely will fall off! Your styrofoam will break and you will spend a good few hours running after tiny white balls. Make your life simple, don't pack it!

• Please don't bring flying lanterns, flares or fireworks.
• Plan your meals - think about refrigeration and storage. Remember - if you don’t eat it, you’ll have to cart rotting food home. The way-back stench is real and distinctly not lekker.[[File:Moop3.jpg|thumb|Liquids can also be MOOP! This shot of a watermelon-ridden cooler box back in 2008 by Monique Schitzenbaum.|326x326px]]
= What the heck do I do with my used water?! =
Water is a scarce resource in the desert, but we still wash with it (whether that be dishes or our bodies)... so what do we do with our used water (or greywater) in a Leave no Trace situation?

==== SHOWER WATER: ====
Catch your shower water in a bucket and use biodegradable EVERYTHING (shampoo, conditioner, scrubs without plastic, shaving stuff, toothpaste, you name it).

Reuse your shower water for your camp dishes (see dishes below) or sprinkle it onto the roads in front of your camp to keep dust down - '''don't make a puddle, think about evaporation'''. Even better would be to evaporate it completely from the bucket but that is not always possible.[[File:Drying scraps in Sun.jpg|thumb|Drying out scraps in the sun ensures minimal smell and easy disposability.|left|422x422px]]
==== DISHES: ====
'''Food scraps are MOOP! Visible moisture puddles or stains on the ground are MOOP!'''[[File:Evapotron.jpg|thumb|Creative method of disposing of grey water.|332x332px]]Bring a 25 litre bucket (or two) with a lid for your organics. Scrape your scraps into these and keep them sealed. Lick your plates and cutlery clean as best you can. Wipe them with paper towels if needed. Said paper towels can be dried out somewhere safe from wind, and burnt. Alternatively, it must be bagged and taken home with you in your own vehicle.

If you need more than a wipe to get them clean, wash dishes with that shower water that you saved and biodegradable soap, then take that water and strain it through a very fine mesh to remove food scraps. These scraps can be popped into your organics bucket or carefully dried on their own and then burnt. If the water has ANY grease or fat in it, it should be decanted into your waste water container and taken home with you.

Sprinkle this now filtered dish water very finely, far away from your camp or on the road to keep dust down, where it will not form a pool and evaporate quickly. Even better would be to evaporate it completely from the bucket but that is not always possible - but get as creative as you can.

=== '''HOW CAMPING IN TANKWA TOWN WORKS''' ===
Camping in Open Camping zones happens on a first-come, first-settled basis. Please don’t settle in a reserved spot – reserved camping areas are for registered Theme Camps and project crews, and are clearly marked out. If you camp on these locations and have occupied someone else’s site, you will be moved, even if you’ve already set up your camp.

Also, the site has [[2022 TANKWA TOWN MAP|large sections of sand that are off-limits.]] Please don't camp in these areas, your cars will get stuck, your tents will fly off if the wind picks up and some poor person will get sand in their breakfast burrito. There is so much space at Quaggafontein - you'll easily find the right spot for your camp.

If you arrive at night, wait until morning to find your friends or get your bearings. If you’re part of a larger group and your camp mates have arrived earlier, get them to leave a message on the notice boards at Off-Centre Camp with their location, or at our event gate.

Remember that the term “Quiet” at AfrikaBurn is a relative term. So, when we give advice about this, we invoke our favourite suffix at AfrikaBurn: “ish”.

If you are keen on a good night’s sleep while in Tankwa Town, don’t settle in the loud area (which is clearly shown on [[2022 TANKWA TOWN MAP|the event ma]]<nowiki/>p in the WTF Guide, which is our event guide). If you are part of a theme camp set right in the noisy zone, consider a second tent in the quiet area for a place to get better sleep.

Once you’ve found your spot, put your keys away in a safe place – you’re now a pedestrian or cyclist!

=== '''RV's AND CARAVANS''' ===
You’re welcome to bring a recreational vehicle or caravan - but be aware that there’s no dumping station on site and you’re not allowed to dump grey water or trash anywhere in Tankwa Town. There’s also no potable water sold, so plan accordingly.

Got a camper-van or RV with a toilet that you intend using for the event? Please take note of this very important info:

Tankwa Town’s toilets are completely organic and use a very specific treatment to enable composting post event. Any dumping of any chemicals other than those used on site will destroy the organic processes that happen in order to create humanure. Please ensure that you have the correct chemical (evergreen elite) in your tank before you get to site. If not, a dump tank will be provided at the entrance to our event for your convenience, into which you can dump your (empty) toilet tank fluid, if you have the incorrect chemicals on arrival.

'''PLEASE''': do NOT dump your motorhome or RV chemical effluent into our toilets![[File:Tools jonx.jpg|thumb|Image by Jonx Pillemer]]
=== '''DELEGATE CAMP ROLES''' ===
If you’re camping in a large group, it’s a good idea to have a meeting before the event and delegate tasks.

For example, nominate a Safety Officer to explain where camp fire extinguishers are and inform all camp members of where the Medics, Security and Sanctuary are and how to orientate yourself. Elect a Trash Officer to take care of separating waste and compacting cans. Choose someone who’s the Costume & Make-up Department. Think about who has the skills you’re after - it’ll lighten the load and make for a better, more enjoyable camp.

=== '''POWER? GO GREEN!''' ===
Come on, people, we’re in the desert here – use the available power resources: go solar! Or get a wind turbine!

Whatever you do, go green and get a 12V deep cycle battery for lighting in your camp – if you’re smart, you’ll get an inverter too.

LED’s are getting cheaper by the day & use very little power - use them instead of incandescent bulbs, even if you have a party space.

And for fairy lights etc, choose solar: they last longer, and you’ll have no dead batteries to get rid of.

=== '''PHONE SIGNAL?''' ===
There is seemingly no cellphone signal on Quaggafontein. We only offer a phone service for serious medical emergencies.
[[File:Camping jonx.jpg|left|thumb|HEAVE! Pic by Jonx Pillemer]]

=== '''CAMPING EQUIPMENT AT TANKWA TOWN: THE GOSPEL OF REBAR''' ===
Rebar. It’s the name given to the round, grooved, steel bar used to reinforce concrete. Get some and have it cut to size – but don’t use anything less than 15mm width. Rebar is an excellent way to anchor your tents, especially Bedouin / freeform tents. When you’re whacking it in, and once it’s in the ground, it’s dangerous, so cap all exposed ends with empty tins, plastic bottles, tennis balls or old dolls heads – anything that prevents foot / leg injuries.

Try to position your tent and any shade structures to present the smallest profile to the wind. The wind at Tankwa goes all over the place - keep an eye on the wind direction, but if forced to identify a prevailing wind, we would say that it is NW- SE. For smaller tents, weight the interior corners of your tent or attach them to your vehicle. For stretch tents bigger than 10m x 10m (i.e: 100sqm), lash down with ratchet straps crossed in an X.

If you are lucky enough to pitch your tent under a Bedouin, your own tent does not need rebar. 200 mm wood nails (spikes) are an excellent alternative to tent pegs that won't bend, and far easier to whack in than rebar. Just make sure to bring a proper hammer.

[[File:Plug and Play diagram.jpg|alt=Plug & Play diagram|thumb|606x606px|Want to check if you're in a Plug & Play camp?]]

If you are already pitching your sleeping tent under a communal Bedouin, you are very unlikely to need rebar for the tent itself.

=== '''NO PLUG AND PLAY CAMPS!''' ===
But what are Plug & Play camps? They’re a camp where ‘staff’ are paid to set the camp up, take it down and do the cleaning, cooking, etc. This kind of paid experience may be available at other events, but AfrikaBurn isn’t other events. So, if anyone offers you a luxury package, explain to them that’s not how it works.

And camps that take a fee for basic infrastructure costs? Those are fine, as long as they’re prepared to show open books that indicate no profit is being made.
== The AfrikaBurn event encyclopedia ==

In years past, this resource used to be called '''<nowiki/>'The survival guide to AfrikaBurn'''' and was printed out and distributed to participants at the event. However, a lot of the information required to 'survive' AfrikaBurn needs to be known long before you set foot in Tankwa Town, so today we have this website - '''Quaggapedia''' - the online encyclopedia of everything you need to know about attending AfrikaBurn, the event. If you're an old or new Burner, please take a bit of time to read through all the various sections and find out all about [[GIFTING|gifting]], [[TOILETS IN TANKWA TOWN|shitting]] and [[FAQ's|everything in between]] at AfrikaBurn.

This resource is maintained by a lovely group of AfrikaBurn volunteers from all around the world. If you want to volunteer and help us build this resource and make it as rich as possible, please contact [[mailto:quaggapedia@afrikaburn.com the Quaggapedia team]] You can help us to translate it, enrich it and add information from your own AfrikaBurn experiences to help [[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|'each one teach one']]
== The Basics ==
Let's start at the very beginning ... [https://www.afrikaburn.org/ AfrikaBurn] is a community of creative participants who gather once a year to create art, dress up, perform, build theme camps, make music, create and drive mutant vehicles and express themselves in a multitude of ways. AfrikaBurn is a registered NPC ([https://www.afrikaburn.org/about/governance-and-transparency/afrikaburn-ownership/ Non-Profit Company]) so we're not trying to sell you anything or influence you to do anything other than be yourself. The AfrikaBurn event is built with a extensive, collaborative volunteer community and gifting culture, with gifting of yourself; your enthusiasm, creativity energy and time being the most precious.

[[File:Volunteer sign.jpg|thumb|719x719px|Image: Jonx Pillemer]]'''As a volunteer-driven event and organisation, AfrikaBurn offers many ways in which anyone can participate. A good starting point would simply be to ask yourself what it is you’d like to do and see where that skill or contribution would fit. Take a look at the following areas, find one that suits you, and then step up, rock up and prepare to have a lot of fun.'''

'''Please come along to the Volunteer Booth at [[MAPS|Off-Centre Camp]] (OCC) and we'll make sure you have fun and make friends while volunteering in Tankwa Town.'''

== Get involved ==
AfrikaBurn will blow your hair back whichever way you choose to experience it. The more you do, the more fun you’ll have – guaranteed, because it’s a do-ocracy – a place where you’re welcome to start something, make something or do anything (within reason). Forget standing at the sidelines – jump in with both feet and get busy!

There are many ways to participate, and it’s largely an anarchic space in the true sense of the word – nobody’s directing the action and you’re free to do as you please as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. The only thing expected of you is that you build something, sing something, dance something, cook something, make something, gift something, share something, play something, or fill almost any role that strikes your fancy – so long as you do something, you’re participating.

If you want to get involved, you’ve come to the right place.

For a start there’s a host of volunteer roles that need filling – and there’s a full list below where you can read about those and sign up for shifts. You can pick your own shifts, and choose what suits you.

If you’re not sure what you want to volunteer for, no problem – you can hop on over to the [https://www.facebook.com/AfrikaBurnVolunteers/?ref=br_rs Volunteer Facebook page], [https://www.instagram.com/afrikaburn_volunteers/?hl=en Instagram] or [https://chat.whatsapp.com/HNQJDd65oyALoHBXCyyNvU Whatsapp] and check out what they’re looking for right now, or get in touch with [Mailto: volunteer@afrikaburn.com volunteer@afrikaburn.com] and they’ll help you find your niche.

== ARTeria ==
Working here means you’re the reception desk for arriving artists and theme camps, both registered and unregistered. You’d get to help them locate their designated spots (or find them one). This is a great way to meet the people that create the magic of Tankwa Town.

== Artworks ==
== Chillaz ==
Heita! Hola! Hi! CHILLAZ launched at AB 2022 and was an absolute game-changer! The epi-centre of the [[MAPS|Off Centre]] hub is looking for crew to take turns during the event to help keep the space shipshape and [[AFRIKABURN DICTIONARY|MOOP]]-free, to field queries from and book slots for those who wish to grace the stage and to be helping hands to the star performers. No technical knowledge required.
== Die Hek (Gate) ==

== Die Yskas (Ice) ==
Literally the coolest place at AfrikaBurn! A large shady tent. No, not shady like your neighbour; shady as in out of the sun. And if that is not enough for you, you can spend some time in the refrigerated truck. DIe Yskas serves the coolest – and only – product sold in Tankwa Town. It’s a great way to meet people, and earn the undying admiration of thirsty and hot burners.

== Leave No Trace ==
The Tankwa Karoo is a pristine environment, but all the stuff that hits the ground has to be removed, and despite the fact that AfrikaBurn is a Leave No Trace event, some people don’t read – or sometimes forget – the manual. Which is when MOOP happens. (Matter Out Of Place) Got some karma to work off?

[https://signup.com/go/LarqcZW Sign up for a morning or afternoon Leave No Trace shift] and have fun while helping folks keep it tidy

== Lost & Found ==
Our Just In(e) booth is where all the missing things are collected. From lost cameras to lost minds, you can find it all here. Shifts involve manning the booth, receiving lost items and logging them and then reuniting people with found items.

[https://signup.com/go/ihgdHfL Click here to reunite humans with their items.]

== Rangers ==
Rangers aren’t the police or security, but rather there to make sure everyone has a good time and doesn’t get hurt. They’re active participants in the community, who promote awareness of what AfrikaBurn is all about and point out potential hazards. Rangers walk about, engage with the community and mediate where necessary.

So if you enjoy assisting others, guiding the odd burner through a difficult circumstance and generally enjoy keeping the peace, you’re Ranger material. But bear in mind you must be calm (although you will be taught to F.L.A.M.E.), flexible and have a sense of humour.

Meet up with [[RANGERS|Rangers]] here: [https://www.facebook.com/afrikaburn.rangers/ Info & Training Page]

== Sanctuary ==
It’s the place where anyone can go if they’re having a hard time or feeling overwhelmed. If it’s a physical or psychological challenge people are facing and it’s too much to handle, our Sanctuary crew will be on hand to assist in a calm, peaceful space. And you’re welcome to join the team.

For info on Sanctuary (and a link to sign up, if you have the required skills), [[SANCTUARY|head here]].
== Throne Crew ==
Want to get involved in the belly of the beast? Become a hero of the suburbs, and a legend whispered about in dark bathrooms around the city! Voted ‘Most Satisfying Crew in 2022’, these are the peeps that roll around in the morning making sure that the loos are stocked and clean and ready to go!

[https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/dpw-application-form/ '''APPLICATIONS TO JOIN DPW IN 2024 are now open!''']

DPW: AfrikaBurn’s very own '''Department of Public Works''', the crew that heads up early to lay down the groundwork of the town, makes sure it all stays put during the event, and then stays for weeks after to break it all down and make sure that nothing remains – Leave No Trace anyone? DPW is a family, brought together by skills, hard work and a love of making and doing.

Besides the year-round behind the scenes planning, logistics and spreadsheeting (as well as providing the backbone of our special events such as Decompression and [https://streetopia.co.za/ Streetopia]), once DPW hits our event site we have the following on our to-do lists:

[[File:DPW-Cindy-Roberts.jpg|right|363x363px|Photo by Cindy Roberts]]

'''Logistics and Site Management'''

Out there, these folks are the ones that make sure everything stays on track. They receive plans and requests from the Operations Team and make sure that they come to life on time. Timelines might literally get washed off blackboards and some crew members might lose track of what day it is but logistics are real and deadlines have to be met.

'''Demarcation and Signage'''

If you’ve ever used a road sign or white tape to make sure you find your way home in Tankwa Town, you’ve got Signage and Demarcation to thank! With over 20km of white tape, thousands of nails and hundreds of squats a day, this crew lays out the city grid. They make the first marks in the dust by marking roads, suburbs and blocks. And once that’s done they put each and every sign out there in its right place.

'''Construction and Workshop'''

Ever had the privilege of witnessing a production line in the desert? These are the guys and girls that make it look pretty. We’ve got a metal shop and a carpentry crew and they take care of building. Decks, massive air control towers, blackboards, floors, lampposts, toilets and shade. You name it, we build it.

'''HEaT (Heavy Equipment and Transport'''

You didn’t think that the desert would need more HEaT, but we do. All those things that the construction teams build need to be installed, and that’s where HEaT comes in. This crew unpacks and moves everything from our storage space on site, puts it in its correct place (hopefully first time) and puts it up. PEOPLE POWER!
[[File:Image-4-Ja-Mean.jpg|581x581px|Photo thanks to Ja Mean|left]]

'''Kitchen'''

The kitchen is the heart of DPW. These legends are responsible for feeding the (very hungry) crew. They get up early and work late to make sure that everyone gets the nutrition they need to succeed in some of the most intense working conditions a human can experience. During the event they feed Medics, Fire fighters, Ops Team, Rangers and other volunteers on shift. Up to 400 people, three meals (deadlines) a day? No problemo!

'''Rigging'''

These are the guys with the tight tunes and cool hotpants.

Ever smashed a rebar into the ground in the Tankwa? Now try doing it over 40 times a day. In a sandstorm. The two rigging crews know the ropes with all the tents, shade, masts, fences and scaff towers needed for all operational infrastructure.

'''Electrics'''

Let there be light (and cold beer)!

The power rangers make sure the VOC (Venue Operations Centre), JOC (Joint Operations Centre), Gate, Off-Centre Camp (OCC), Medics, Airport and Site Office have electricity, lights, and radio comms.

They also make sure the lampposts all work, and that you have enough light to not fall off the toilet steps.

'''Mechanical'''

The DPW fleet is a special one, made up of some of the most interesting cars you will ever see. Our mechanics know what’s up and do what it takes to make sure our cars and tools keep working despite the desert conditions.[[File:Image-9-Ja-mean.jpg|Photo by Ja Mean|right]]

'''WASH - Waste and Sanitation.'''

The stinkiest crew on site. This involves making sure that all the toilets are constructed and ready for the event, maintained during the event, and that all the kak is sorted after. WASH is also our brilliant waterworks team who sets up the showers and deals with all the greywater we generate.

But that’s not all. We also have the BEST recycling depot EVER, which sorts out all the trash generated by DPW and the VOC over the course of our stay on site, as well as processes all the MOOP that Leave No Trace collects post event.

Toilets, Recycling, Plumbing and Clean up. Sorted.

You will never have an experience quite like a season with DPW. It’s an exercise in hard work, community, and service. And you’re guaranteed to make a new family. Keen? Think you have the gumption and the gusto to join the hardest working crew in the Southern Hemisphere? Want to strain and sweat in the lovely Tankwa sunshine for weeks and weeks, building a massive city of participation and invention?

AfrikaBurn has noted that the way outside service providers (suppliers) have been allowed to operate in recent years has had a negative impact on the community and the creativity of the event. Theme camps that were formed to support the community in various ways have since fallen away as Burners increasingly choose to pay suppliers instead of seeking assistance through Communal Effort or just relying on themselves to get things done.

In this way, our previous supplier process has stifled creative innovation, squashed the existing community, and facilitated a practice that goes against our core ethos and [[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|11 Guiding Principles]].

With this in mind, AfrikaBurn has created a new Supplier Policy, which will be implemented at '''AfrikaBurn 2024.'''

==== How do you know if you are a supplier or if you need to register your supplier? ====

* If you are a company providing items or services to participants in Tankwa Town, then you are a supplier and must register via AfrikaBurn’s Supplier Programme.
* If you are part of a Creative Crew and are hiring anything from or engaging any services rendered on-site in Tankwa Town, we request that you ask your supplier to register via AfrikaBurn’s Supplier Programme. This includes any transportation and sound companies.

==== What changes have been implemented for AfrikaBurn 2024? ====

* No goods or services will be permitted to be supplied to personal or private camps.
* Suppliers may only provide goods and services to '''registered creative projects''' (Theme Camps, Artworks and Mutant Vehicles possessing a Project Registration Code).
* Participants using suppliers must always accompany any suppliers setting up on their behalf.
* All deliveries will happen in the designated delivery zone of the '''Suppliers Depot.''' Participants must collect their goods from the depot and transport them to their camps or arrange delivery from the delivery zone.
* Service providers cannot deliver camping equipment (Eg: Dome Tents, Bedding, Kitchen equipment, crockery & cutlery etc) to the AfrikaBurn event site. All equipment is only permitted to be dry hired, collected from the company’s hire premises and transported to site by participants.

== '''Suppliers and Plug & Play''' ==
[https://www.afrikaburn.org/plug-and-play-guidelines/ Plug & Play] Camps – which are in effect private hotels – are not permitted at our event.

Outsourcing the effort by having paid staff to set up a camp completely, sidesteps fundamental aspects of a Burn, diluting the ethos and point of the exercise…if you’re doing this, you’re denying yourself the full experience and stand a good chance of being prevented from setting up a camp of a similar nature in the future.

To put it simply: essential set-up services are OK to outsource, but paid staff (including cleaners, chefs or other staff) are not. This also means that you’re expected to get involved, and not just be a spectator when your supplier arrives on site to deliver the services / goods you have arranged.

Please help support the culture of AfrikaBurn – don’t engage in “plug-and-play” scenarios. At AfrikaBurn, there’s no ‘someone else’ that builds Tankwa Town: every person is expected to build, clean and then break down their camp.

'''Participants providing [https://www.afrikaburn.org/plug-and-play-guidelines/ Plug-and-Play camping] may forfeit their right to return to Tankwa Town again.'''

'''Suppliers supporting or servicing plug-and-play camps will face hefty penalties, including the forfeit of their deposit and/or access to the event in the future.'''

If in doubt, whether you are a participant or a supplier, please [[Mailto:suppliers@afrikaburn.com|chat with us]] at AfrikaBurn and we will guide you in the right direction.

'''Please note: The following services are prohibited at the Afrikaburn Event:'''

* No supplier is allowed to provide showers or toilets at the AfrikaBurn event. AfrikaBurn participants are expected to build their own showers and use the toilets provided. Anyone with accessibility needs, please contact [[Mailto:info@afrikaburn.com|info@afrikaburn.com]].
* No decor deliveries are permitted to site by decor suppliers. Decor is to be transported to Quaggafontein by the creative crew involved in the Creative Project.
* Deliveries of food and beverages that form part of a camp gift are permitted as a single-entry drop-off at the Suppliers’ Depot. Food and beverage deliveries for personal consumption are not allowed.
* Service providers are not permitted to deliver camping equipment to the AfrikaBurn event site. All equipment can only be dry-hired, collected from the company’s hire premises and transported to site by participants.

== '''Supplier Registration Process''' ==
The onus is on you to ensure that your supplier complies with the [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eUZY7XBD8ZV4s2rh3EVX-5DcsEMO_PMg/view?pli=1 supplier policy] that AfrikaBurn has put in place.

'''[https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1I8J5u34NG5RMeUMZcOyslPjZxED_YJkSQ6nvpLa1zc4/viewform?edit_requested=true Register your supplier HERE.] DEADLINE TO REGISTER: FRIDAY 29 MARCH 2024.'''

AfrikaBurn will get in touch with your supplier to ensure that they get the correct information to ensure smooth entry into the event.

Take note of where the '''Supplier Depot''' is when you arrive on site. You will need to fetch your supplier from the depot and escort them to your campsite.

Practice radical self-reliance and arrange a date and time in which to meet your supplier on site at the Supplier Depot.

Check that your supplier has the correct credentials to access the event (don’t assume they’ve sorted this themselves).

Arrange that at least 2 people from your camp are present to assist your supplier when they arrive at your campsite to deliver the service you have requested.

Ensure that at least 2 people remain on site to assist your supplier to pack up the service they have provided you.

'''REMEMBER:''' Suppliers and service providers have a tendency to bring default world thinking into Tankwa Town, and that kind of “service mentality” has no place in or around our beloved Binnekring.

Sunday 5 May 2024: '''GATE CLOSED/EXIT ONLY''' (re-entry only if you have already been issued a wristband)

== '''What documentation will you need to access the event?''' ==
The Gate Crew will check your '''photo ID''' against your ticket details in the system. ID/Passport or Drivers’ Licenses will be accepted, so please '''ensure that your ID/Passport number is correct on the ticket''' of every person who’s travelling with you. (A clear copy of your photo ID is also accepted.)

When purchasing your tickets, please ensure that you have the correct '''emergency contact details''' for someone off and onsite at AfrikaBurn as the Box Office crew links your uniquely numbered wristband to your details in the system. This is to assist the team in case of an emergency.

The vehicle you are travelling in will need a '''E-Toll disk''' too. These disks will be available to purchase online or at the gate right up until the event gates close at '''7pm on Friday'''.

== For the '''Best Gate Experience™''' – come prepared! ==
'''Print your ticket''' out, or make sure your smart device has enough battery! Gate can be pretty unforgiving especially when there’s hundreds of other, better prepared, more organised and less frustrated folk that are clamoring to get in.

Again, '''make sure the details on your ID/Passport match the details on your ticket'''. If they don’t, please check the edit details & transfer ticket information in the [https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/#FAQ Ticketing FAQ’s].

'''Early Arrival''': If you are arriving before gates officially open then you need to be in possession of a '''Work Access Pass (WAP)''' which you will have received from your creative project lead or the Volunteer Portfolio. Kids and minors do not require a WAP (but will require a parent or guardian to accompany them). *

<nowiki>*</nowiki> '''WAPs include a Vehicle Pass''' however WAPs will not be accepted as a Vehicle Pass after Sunday 24th April. '''Crew passes include a WAP and a Vehicle Pass'''.

== '''As you prepare for the desert, remember that you're responsible for YOURSELF at all times. Radical Self-Reliance!''' ==
Use lots of common sense: you need to bring everything you need to the desert, including all food, water, shelter, fuel, and basic first aid. And then you need to take it all back – because this is a '''Leave No Trace''' event.

Before you arrive, make sure you have your '''TICKET''' - printed or on a phone / device (with battery). Make 100% sure that your name is on your ticket and that you bring photo ID to the gate with you. Our gate crew will need this to verify your ticket and can’t let you in if the details on your ID and ticket don’t match.

== '''Essentials''' ==
'''THIS AIN’T NO PARTY. THIS AIN’T NO DISCO. THIS IS ONE SERIOUS DESERT FANDANGO AND YOU MUST BRING:'''

- Your ticket & photo ID for entry (SA ID, driver’s licence or passport) – ensure the name on your ticket is the same name on your ID/Passport.

- E-Toll per vehicle (Previously called Vehicle Pass). Caravans and trailers don’t need one but motorcycles do.

- 5 litres of water per person per day - carry a bottle of water with you and rehydrate regularly. Remember that water doesn't only come in 5 litre plastic bottles - help yourself to leave less trace by filling up a 25 litre container (with a tap) for your water needs.

- Enough food and beverages for the duration of your entire stay.

- Shelter, bedding, and preferably an open shade structure too. If it’s not windproof, kiss it goodbye.

- Protective clothing (including warm clothes and waterproof gear). It might be the desert and it is very warm in the day, but nights can be freezing and if and when it rains, it pours.

- Trash bags – because you’re going to be taking it all back with you.

- Fire extinguisher.

- Comprehensive medical aid kit. Any required prescriptions (please note: our medics don’t dispense painkillers, headache tabs or antibiotics)

- Lighting: a headlamp, torch, bike light, fairy lights, EL wire (and spare batteries). Solar lights rock – find ‘em & use ‘em.

- Duct tape & cable ties – because they hold the universe together!

- Bringing wood? Bring a brazier or braai - '''campfires on the ground are NOT permitted.'''

- Recycling bins: you’ll need one for wet waste (a 25 litre bucket with a lid works well for this!), and others for paper, plastic and metal / glass - remember that the wind blows so make sure your bins are secured! Check out local area recycling depots, and use them on your way home – there’s nowhere for you to leave your trash on site.

== '''Do NOT bring''' ==
Sure, it’s a burn you’re going to, but there are some items that are seriously not wanted at the event, and all for the same reason: they’re dangerous, either as mobile arson, or to critters. Not lekker.

- Feathers of any kind, such as boas, which shed and get blown in the wind.

- Glitter (even bio-degradeable, because others can’t tell whether it’s degradeable, and will assume all glitter’s ok, which results in horrifically difficult clean-ups for Leave No Trace Volunteers)

- Flares, Fireworks, Fire lanterns, explosives or firearms of any kind, including BB guns or pellet guns.

- Excess packaging. Lighten your load – just bring the contents.

- Plants and pets of any kind. If it doesn’t belong there, leave it where it does.

- [https://www.reddit.com/r/BurningMan/comments/4zee5i/whats_the_origin_of_the_term_sparkle_pony/ Sparkle Ponies]
== '''Highly Recommended''' ==

- Umbrellas, parasols, hats, sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses.

- Bring a bicycle (mountain bikes are best) and decorate it, make it an installation, light it up for nighttime cruising. Bring a puncture kit.

- A portable shower.

- Smokers should bring a portable ashtray. No butts on the floor. At all. Not even one butt, boet. The Tankwa is pristine and we are all tasked with keeping it that way.

- Anything that can make sharp tent staves safer (tennis balls: perfect).

- An extra set of car keys, just in case.

- Costumes, musical instruments, signs, body paint and anything else that might enrich and make your AfrikaBurn more fun for you and your neighbours.

=== How do I buy tickets? ===
You can purchase tickets on Quicket (and ONLY on Quicket.) All ticket info will be available on [https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/ tickets.afrikaburn.org].

Once tickets are sold out, resales will be available on Quicket ONLY.

[https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/re-selling-your-ticket/ How to sell a ticket]. [https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/re-buying-a-ticket/ How to buy a ticket.] [https://www.quicket.co.za/events/231484-afrikaburn-2024-creation/#/ Here is Quicket.] Any ticket queries need to be sent to Quicket Support or email tickets@afrikaburn.com .

=== What's an E-Toll? ===
The E-Toll (Environment Toll) is designed to encourage ride-sharing and reduce the number of cars on our event site and the R355 (the tyre-eating and treacherous road to AfrikaBurn). In previous years, it was called a ‘Vehicle Pass’ until scammers started uploading them as tickets to everyone’s least favourite ticketing site, Viagogo.

One E-Toll is required per motorised vehicle entering the event. Mutant Vehicles (on trailers), caravans (that are being towed) and trailers do not need to pay E-Tolls – but motorcycles & motorhomes do.

=== How do I join an AfrikaBurn Theme Camp? ===
The best place is the AfrikaBurn community run Theme Camps group on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1230848117010749

=== Do you rent bicycles? ===
No, but the Pedals For Peace crew does a fabulous job of allowing you to get a bike and then donate it after the event:

https://www.facebook.com/Pedalsforpeace/

=== Are there other ways to get to the event? ===
If you're unable to [[GETTING THERE & DIRECTIONS|drive or hire a car]], you can also share a ride. Visit [https://www.facebook.com/groups/136553123182062 the Tankwa Ride & Share Group on Facebook] to look for ride options.

There is also an unofficial and private bus service called [https://www.facebook.com/BUStoAfrikaBURN Take a Bus To Afrikaburn.]

=== What about kids? ===
Kids (14 years and younger) & minors (15 – 17 years old) entering the event:

Anyone under the age of 18 entering the event needs to be accompanied by an adult 28 years or older. Parents/legal guardians or elected guardians 28 years and older are only allowed to accompany a maximum of 4 kids/minors to the event. This is to ensure that there’s enough adult supervision of kids/minors onsite.

The Box Office Crew will request who the guardian is of all under age kids/minors entering the event. Once this person has been identified, we’ll link the guardian/parents’ wrist band to the kid/minors’ wrist band that they will be supervising onsite.

If you know what your Tankwa Town address is, please come prepared with that information so that we can record those details against your name/wristband on the database.

Kids Tickets are available to purchase at the gate (R499). Minor Tickets are not. Cash and card accepted. [[File:Participation.jpg|thumb|570x570px|'''Don't forget to Volunteer!''']]

=== How do I edit the details on my ticket? ===
If you find that the details on your ticket do not match the details on your ID/Passport please ensure that you edit the details on your ticket before arriving in the desert.

Log into your account on Quicket.

Click on your account (top right).

Click on “My Tickets”.

Find your AfrikaBurn ticket/WAP.

Alongside “Options” – Click “Edit details”.

To deter scalpers, AfrikaBurn have only allowed one edit – however we are allowing a 2nd edit to ensure that your ticket admin is sorted before you arrive in the desert.

Note: This option is not available to Subsidised Ticket, Pensioner Ticket or Anathi Ticket holders.

=== How do I transfer my ticket to someone else? ===
If your circumstances have changed and you have sold/gifted your ticket to someone else, please use the transfer ticket facility on Quicket. This will cancel your ticket barcode and remove the ticket from your basket and deliver the ticket to the new owner’s email address. The new ticket owner needs to download the ticket before arriving in the desert.

Log into your account on Quicket.

Click on “My Tickets”.

Note: This option is not available to Subsidised Ticket, Pensioner Ticket or Anathi Ticket holders.

=== How do I get to Quaggafontein? ===
AfrikaBurn now takes place on a farm in the Tankwa Karoo called Quaggafontein. TOP TIP: Do not use your GPS!

[[File:Participation.jpg|thumb|445x445px|'''Don't forget to Volunteer!''']]

Note: This option is not available to Subsidised Ticket, Pensioner Ticket or Anathi Ticket holders.

=== How do I transfer my ticket to someone else? ===
== The Hitchhikers Guide to Quaggafontein (or the AfrikaBurn event encyclopedia) ==

== The Basics ==

The main annual AfrikaBurn event takes place in the Tankwa Karoo, [[GETTING THERE & DIRECTIONS|located]] between the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. The next event in 2023 is from the 24th to the 30th of April. You can find out more about getting [https://tickets.afrikaburn.org/ tickets to AfrikaBurn here.]

'''Gifting is one of the [[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|11 Guiding Principles]] Burners strive to follow.'''[[File:Gifting.jpg|thumb|Gifting illustration by Ilse Erasmus|449x449px]]A gift is offered unconditionally, without expectation of anything in return. It can be big or it can be small, but its impact depends on you.

If you're stuck about what to bring as a gift to AfrikaBurn, remember that '''the best gifts are not things'''. The best gifts are about creating moments of magic out there in the dust. A lasting memory to take back into the default world with you to remind you of the beauty of the burn.

'''Some advice for virgin burners:''' Don't stress about what you are going to bring to gift your first year! Just bring yourself, be present, if you can lend a hand - do. If you see a small way that you can make someone's day - DO IT! '''[[VOLUNTEER|PARTICIPATE]]!''' Sign up for a few volunteer shifts, it's incredibly rewarding to be part of making the burn happen, we are participant-driven, and as you learn what you love about AfrikaBurn, so ideas for gifts will come to you.

When gifting out there in the dust remember the other principles. Think about the repercussions of your gift once it has been given - yes beaded necklaces are nice, but what if the string snaps? Tiny beads are a [[LEAVE NO TRACE|MOOP]] disaster! If you're gifting, say, orange slices; what happens to the peels once the people are done? In a world full of trinkets, perhaps rather consider the gift of your time, labour, love or assistance. Maybe something pragmatic like a plaster or some iced water on a hot day, an experience, a game, a song, or simply accepting and acknowledging another's existence.

If you are gifting any foodstuff, inform the receiver of the ingredients (food allergies are real). If you've added a little something special into your gift - '''TELL THEM!''' Do not assume that everyone wants that alcohol or other enhancement in their day, [[CONSENT]] is key, always. Be completely open and transparent as to what your gift contains so that the person receiving the gift can make an informed decision.

[[File:ROB ERASMUS 49640135025893976 o.jpg|left|thumb|467x467px|Some baked treats from the Grease Monkeys - a lovely gift, but be sure to check if the muffins have any chain lube or rubber added to them before snacking. Image: Rob Erasmus]]
Remember that as much as you are free to offer a gift, the recipient is free to either accept, or decline the gift. Be gracious about refusal and offer your gift to someone else!

Make 100% sure your name is on your ticket, and that you bring photo ID to the gate with you. Our gate crew will need this to verify your ticket and can’t let you in if the details on your ID and ticket don’t match.

== '''Essentials''' ==

- Vehicle Pass (one per vehicle). Caravans and trailers don’t need a VP but motorcycles do.

== '''Do NOT bring''' ==

== '''Highly Recommended''' ==

'''These are the most basic 'rules' that there are in Tankwa Town.''' AfrikaBurn is an autonomous space with no hard and fast rules, but these are the few that are important:

[[File:Afrikaburn 2019 JonxPillemer-361.jpg|left|thumb|387x387px|The most bike friendly place on earth, Tankwa Town. Image: Jonx Pillemer]]
'''PARK YOUR VEHICLE AND LEAVE IT ALONE.'''

Tankwa Town is a pedestrian and cyclist environment – the only vehicles permitted to drive around are [[MUTANT VEHICLES|Mutant Vehicles]] and those used by emergency and event crews. When arriving and leaving Tankwa Town, drive very slowly - the speed limit is 10km/h for anything on wheels. Heads up: motorbikes and scooters must be registered as Mutants in order to be driven at all on our event site. Also, put your keys somewhere safe that you'll remember after a week in the dust.

'''BICYCLES ARE NOT PUBLIC PROPERTY'''

If it’s not your bike, don’t ride it. Don't even think about borrowing it and bringing it back later ... If you have a bike, don't forget to lock it when not in use.

[[File:Afrikaburn 2019 JonxPillemer-339.jpg|thumb|The ice queens. Image: Jonx Pillemer|414x414px]]

'''NOTHING IS BOUGHT OR SOLD IN TANKWA TOWN'''

Except for [[PARTICIPATE|ice]], and that’s to keep your food and liquids chilled. It’s a [[DECOMMODIFICATION|decommodified]] zone – so please don’t buy or sell anything. And while you're at it, please cover up any brands or logos. Louis Vuitton and his mate Hugo Boss have no value in Tankwa Town.

'''LEAVE NO TRACE'''

This means you’ll see no rubbish bins or receptacles, other than those you bring with you. Everything that you bring in, you must take out with you. Keep a small bag with you when you're exploring Tankwa Town - it’s good for carrying water and putting rubbish in.

'''NO PETS ALLOWED'''

Please don’t arrive at the event with your pet - there are good reasons for us not to allow them. ''Please note: the only exception here is for service dogs.''

[[File:Afrikaburn 2019 JonxPillemer-1092.jpg|left|thumb|400x400px|Not cool ... unless you've been invited by the artist to participate. Image: Jonx Pillemer]]

'''PROTECTION OF ARTWORKS'''

If you see someone vandalising, removing or stealing items from an artwork (or something that looks like an artwork), please immediately ask them to stop. Inform a Ranger if necessary .

A lot of hard work goes into the art that you’ll see in Tankwa Town, and it’s shared with you as a gift. Please respect the art and the artists. Scrawling your lame-ass tag on someone else's art is not cool unless the artist has specifically invited you to do so ... as often happens in the temple.

'''PLANE? DRONE? USE OF AIRSPACE?'''

You can’t fly anything into or at AfrikaBurn except a kite (unbranded) – whether recreational or for commercial purposes (i.e. carrying a camera) - without registering with our [[PLANES, DRONES & AIRCRAFTS|Airspace crew]].

'''VERY IMPORTANT: No drones are allowed on site.'''
Anibhttps://quaggapedia.afrikaburn.com/index.php?title=WHERE_TO_FIND_(WTF)_GUIDE_2023&diff=2651WHERE TO FIND (WTF) GUIDE 20232023-05-17T06:48:40Z
Anib: spacing fix

'''Just In(e), is our Lost & Found hut that can be found at [[TANKWA TOWN MAP 2023|OCC]] during the event.'''

Anything not claimed by the end of the event will be brought back to our Cape Town HQ and we will begin sorting and categorising when we've recovered from the event itself.

All this information and all the photographs will then be posted on our '''[https://www.facebook.com/groups/afrikaburn2022lostfound/ Lost & Found Group on Facebook].'''

This is not an easy process, so be patient.

For more direct communication with our Lost & Found Team, you can send an email to [Mailto:lostandfound@afrikaburn.com lostandfound@afrikaburn.com] with a clear description of the item, as well as any further information (photos, sketches, serial number, etc.) and they will communicate with you via email.

All items not positively identified will be donated to charities through our outreach programme, and all bicycles not collected will be donated to the communities surrounding Tankwa Town and previously disadvantaged communities in Cape Town.

== TOP TIPS ==
Set your phone lock screen text or background image to a picture of your camp, location, and your name. Name is critical. If your phone is turned into Lost and Found, they will '''not''' be able to deliver the phone to your camp.

Fill out your Medical ID, Emergency contacts, and medical information on your phone before the burn. First responders can find your info on your phone even if the screen is locked. In settings on your Android phone, search for 'emergency' and on iPhones look for Medical ID.

If the AfrikaBurn lost and found volunteers are able to locate a name on your phone's emergency screen, they will type that name into the ticketing database to find your details.
== The Hitchhikers Guide to Quaggafontein (or the AfrikaBurn event encyclopedia). ==

== The Basics ==

== The Hitchhikers Guide to Quaggafontein (or the AfrikaBurn event encyclopedia). ==

== The Basics ==

[[GUIDING PRINCIPLES|'''GUIDING PRINCIPLES''']] - The ideals that provide guidelines to how we as a community reinvent Tankwa Town (and ourselves) when we attend AfrikaBurn.

'''[[BASICS|IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING]]''' - Then make sure it's this page. It has the most basic of basic things you need to know before you enter Tankwa Town.

[[PHONES, PHOTOS & PRIVACY IN TANKWA TOWN|'''PHONES, PHOTOS & PRIVACY IN TANKWA TOWN''']] - AfrikaBurn is a 'Temporary Autonomous Zone', which means that you can be whoever you want to be in Tankwa Town. That also means that you need to respect the privacy of AfrikaBurn participants. Find out why it's a good idea to lose your mobile phone in Tankwa Town [[PHONES, PHOTOS & PRIVACY IN TANKWA TOWN|here]].

[[GIFTING|'''GIFTING''']] - What do you get as a gift for the person who has everything? Or has nothing? Gifting is a central aspect of AfrikaBurn and it's important to know how to give and receive a gift in the right way. Find out how to be a great gifter [[GIFTING|here]].

[[AFRIKABURN DICTIONARY|'''AFRIKABURN DICTIONARY''']] - There are loads of bizarre words and acronyms that the AfrikaBurn community has made up and adopted through the years. Make sure you know what MOOP is before you pack your glitter by reading more [[AFRIKABURN DICTIONARY|here]]. There is also a handy '''[[South African Slang|South African Slang page here.]]'''

== Tankwa Town ==
Tankwa Town is the name of the temporary city that we build as a community of participants at every AfrikaBurn event. It's not like any other city you've been to before (even Black Rock City!). The first thing you're going to need to know is where on earth to find it. The journey can be long and treacherous, so please make sure you're educated by reading through this section of Quaggapedia.

[[GETTING THERE & DIRECTIONS|'''GETTING THERE & DIRECTIONS''']] - How to get to Tankwa Town. HOT TIP: Don't use GPS.
== The Hitchhikers Guide to Quaggafontein (or the AfrikaBurn event encyclopedia). ==

== The Basics ==

== Tankwa Town ==

Sunday 30 April 2023: '''GATE CLOSED/EXIT ONLY''' (re-entry only if you have already been issued a wristband)

=== '''What documentation will you need to access the event?''' ===
Die Hek Force (Gate & Ticketing crew) will check your '''photo ID''' against your ticket details in the system.

The vehicle you are travelling in will need a '''vehicle pass''' too. These passes will be available to purchase at the gate right up until the event gates close at '''7pm on Friday'''.

For the Best Gate Experience™ – come prepared!

====== Please ensure that your ticket/s are either printed out or downloaded on your phone. Any form of WIFI or mobile data disappears the moment you hit the dust road. Don’t rely on it. ======
=== How do I buy tickets? ===

=== How do I connect or hook up with an AfrikaBurn Theme Camp? ===

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1230848117010749

=== Do you rent bicycles? ===

https://www.facebook.com/Pedalsforpeace/

=== Are there other ways to get to the event? ===
If you're unable to [[GETTING THERE & DIRECTIONS|drive or hire a car]], you can also share a ride. Visit [https://www.facebook.com/groups/136553123182062 the Tankwa Ride & Share Group on Facebook] to look for ride options.

There is also an unofficial and private bus service called [https://www.facebook.com/BUStoAfrikaBURN Take a Bus To Afrikaburn.]

=== What about kids? ===

[[File:Participation.jpg|thumb|445x445px|'''Don't forget to Volunteer!''']]

Log into your account on Quicket.

Click on your account (top right).

Note: This option is not available to Subsidised Ticket, Pensioner Ticket or Anathi Ticket holders.

=== How do I transfer my ticket to someone else? ===
This will cancel your ticket barcode and remove the ticket from your basket and deliver the ticket to the new owner’s email address. The new ticket owner needs to download the ticket before arriving in the desert.
[[SOUND & QUIET|Looking for the 2023 Sound Map? All the details are here.]]
Anibhttps://quaggapedia.afrikaburn.com/index.php?title=SOUND_%26_QUIET&diff=2626SOUND & QUIET2023-04-21T13:35:12Z
Anib: added 2023 sound map and post

[[File:2023 Sound Map.jpg|frame|2023 Sound Map]]
In 2018 we introduced two major changes to how & where loud sound can live alongside everything and everyone else in Tankwa Town: a mandatory sound switch off daily from Monday - Thursday of the event from 7 to 11am, and The Great Switcheroo, a relocation of all large sound rigs to the northwest side of our city – and these both worked really well.

Our Quiet Period is now part of the rhythm of our city, and includes generators staying off during the quiet. It’s a beautiful time, when acoustic music and nature sounds rule the space – enjoy it (there’s plenty time on the weekend for noise and amps).

Sound Rangers are stationed at [[TANKWA TOWN MAP 2023|Off-Centre Camp]] - if you need them, head over there and ask the Volunteer crew to call them in via radio. They will also visit dancefloors to check that sound is placed correctly - please work with our crew to ensure the best results for your neighbours, and yourself.

'''2023 Update:'''

We were tempted to make the whole map red because Tankwa Town can be pretty noisy, with all sorts of crashes, bangs and wallops happening day and night. This year, most of the sound camps are located on the Binnekring, making the Binnekring the ‘loud zone’, with things getting progressively quieter the further back one goes from the centre.

There are now two Quiet Camping Areas at AfrikaBurn: one behind the dunes on 3ish and 4ish roads and one behind the dunes on 9ish and 10ish roads. These areas are meant to be free of generators and any amplified music.

We don't like the word 'rules', and we can't guarantee total silence anywhere at AfrikaBurn, but in the quiet camping areas, at least your neighbours won't be blasting the chili poopers all week on a shitty Bluetooth speaker.

'''Quiet Camping Area:''' No generators or amplified music at any time.

'''General Camping:''' No generators or amplified music between 11 pm and 11 am

'''Binnekring and A roads:''' Sound shut off at 2 am, Monday to Thursday.

'''Louder Zone:''' Sound shut off at 7 am, Monday to Thursday.

'''Quiet Hours:''' No generators or amplified music, 7 am to 11 am, Monday to Thursday, anywhere in Tankwa Town.

=== '''GOT SOUND? GET PLACED IN THE RIGHT ZONE''' ===
Music’s an important part of Tankwa Town for many people, so if you’re bringing music, everyone’ll love you. But our site is relatively small (1.6km at the longest reach), so if you have a sound system, then you should register as a sound camp to be placed in the right area.

Please note: NO SOUND SYSTEMS CAN BE PLAYED LOUD IN OPEN CAMPING.

There are Sound Zones for sound systems – please don’t create friction by blasting neighbours.

Keep all this in mind when choosing your spot to camp.
[[File:Loud zone jonx.jpg|left|thumb|337x337px|Image by Jonx Pillemer]]
It’s simple - want relative quiet when in your personal camp? Don’t camp in the Loud Zone. Want to play loud music? You simply cannot settle in the Quiet Zone.

The greatest concentration of family camps where a good night’s sleep can be had are on the back line of the Binnekring or in the 'quiet camping' spots

'''If you have a dancefloor, but nobody’s dancing, please turn it down, or off.''' Tomorrow’s another day and the desert’s not kind on those who don’t sleep.

QUIET ZONE - These are spaces that are not located next to large sound systems and you are likely to get more shut eye.

LOUD ZONE - These are the areas where we locate the camps that are gifting music of the amplified variety.

=== '''SOUND PLACEMENT''' ===
Bass bins must be raised off the ground (on a platform such as a pallet), and all speakers must be aimed away from camping areas and the Quiet Zones. This is for stationary sound systems. If you use an amplified sound system at your Theme Camp or on a Mutant Vehicle, keep the volume at a reasonable level. Crazy sound levels that continue after requests and warnings will be disabled. Some artworks are intended to be quiet and reflective spaces – respect this and cut your sound when approaching art installations and performances, or entering the city.

=== '''GENERATORS?''' ===
You should really rather be using solar. If you must use a generator, it must be insulated to keep noise down.

[[File:Sound map.jpg|thumb|608x608px|2022 AfrikaBurn Sound map]]
=== '''SOMEONE / SOMECAMP BEING RIDICULOUS WITH THEIR NOISE LEVELS?''' ===
Peeps invariably get over exited and often don't stick to quiet times. If you see a camp blasting away with no peeps on the dance-floor, try chatting to them first, or head over to Off-Centre Camp to find some Sound Rangers stationed there - - ask the Volunteer crew to call them in via radio.

=== '''PART OF A THEME CAMP AND GETTING ZERO SLEEP?''' ===
You've joined a theme camp and you're placed on or near the binnekring, and have pooled resources in order to have a nice communal Bedouin tent, communal kitchen/chill area, and everything is going swell until you realise you're getting zero sleep because the boogy camp next to you has the kind of bass that goes through industrial grade-earplugs? Bring a second small tent and bedding with you to pitch in the quiet zone as a backup, for those times when you really just need to sleep. Sleep depravation impairs thinking, can lead to irrational and risky behaviour and erodes empathy, never-mind general grumpiness and resentment towards your fellow humans.

=== The privacy of our participants with regards to photography. ===
In previous years at AfrikaBurn, you needed to get a pink 'No Photo' wristband if you wanted your desire not to have your photo taken in Tankwa Town to be made visible. We've found that this has not stopped our participants from showing up unexpectedly in social media posts online when they're radically expressing themselves. This year, (which is the same as EVERY year) the agreement upon entering Tankwa Town is that '''all participants at AfrikaBurn have not given their consent to be photographed,''' whether they are wearing a pink wristband or not'''.''' It's important to note that Quaggafontein and AfrikaBurn are not public events and are not held on public land. Only the people that have given express permission for their photo to be taken can be photographed in 2023. More information can be found [[PHONES, PHOTOS & PRIVACY IN TANKWA TOWN|here.]]

=== DDT Tickets are no more ===
To make things easier for theme camps, mutants and artists to get tickets, we used to have Direct Distribution Tickets (DDTs) available through various channels. However, this made the final numbers on site much harder to manage and not all of this allocation was often used up. Therefore this year, if you need a ticket to get into AfrikaBurn (which is pretty much everyone), you'll need to please buy your ticket in the general sale which is happening in November. (Please see the Ticketing Townhall [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDvGATEFqsY&t=2&ab_channel=AfrikaBurn video on youtube] for more info.)
=== '''What documentation will you need to access the event?''' ===
Die Hek Force (Gate & Ticketing crew) will check your '''photo ID''' against your ticket details in the system. ID/Passport or Drivers’ Licenses will be accepted, so please '''ensure that your ID/Passport number is correct on the ticket''' of every person who’s travelling with you.

When purchasing your tickets, please ensure you have the correct '''emergency contact details''' for someone off and onsite at AfrikaBurn as the Box Office crew links your uniquely numbered wristband to your details in the system. This is to assist the team in case of an emergency.

The vehicle you are travelling in will need a '''vehicle pass''' too, these passes will be available to purchase online (or at the gate) right up until the event gates close at '''7pm on Friday'''.

For the Best Gate Experience™ – come prepared! '''Print your ticket''' out, or make sure your smart device has enough battery!
